10 Things to Know Before Having Your Car Repaired

Before you have your car repaired there are things you need to consider. Below are 10 Things to Know Before Having Your Car Repaired.

While these steps will not alleviate the pain of being without your car while it is repaired they will offer you some control in the process of getting the most out of your repair.

  1. Your car is the second largest investment you’re likely to make. Preserve its value and your safety by having it repaired professionally.
  2. Never drive a car that could be unsafe because of damages.
  3. Some insurance companies may want you to visit their drive-in claims center before having your car repaired. You can do this, or you may leave your car at your collision repair shop and ask that the insurance company inspect the car there.
  4. You are not required by law to obtain more than one estimate or appraisal.
  5. You have the right to go to the repair shop of your choice. Your insurance company cannot require you to go to a particular shop.
  6. Differences in repair estimates are common. A lower price may not include all necessary work. If you’re not sure why one estimate is different from another you’ve received, ask the shop manager.
  7. Choose a shop that has uni-body repair equipment and certified (by I-CAR or ASE, for example) Technicians.
  8. Ask if the shop will be using genuine manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts.
  9. Ask if the shop offers a repair warranty.
  10. Let the collision repair shop you choose help you negotiate your claim with the insurance company, this often leads to a better deal.

These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to ask about the difference between estimates when looking for an auto body repair shop. I was recently in a minor accident, so I need to have my car repaired so I can drive it safely again. I’ll definitely be getting estimates from several different sources, and I’ll ask about the difference between them so I can make sure I know what services are being paid for. Thanks for the great post!

Thank you for providing this information about what one should know when it comes to collision repair. I did not know that it is not required by law to get more than one appraisal. This might be beneficial anyway to find reparations for a low cost. Something else to consider would be to ensure that the company is licensed and insured.

Thanks for sharing some tips for having your car repaired. You make a great point about how your car is one of the biggest investments you will make, so it is important to preserve it by having it repaired by a professional. My husband thinks he can fix our car by himself, but I think I will try to convince him to take it to a mechanic who can ensure that it is repaired properly.

I got in my first car accident last week and now I need to take my car to an auto body repair shop. I like how you point out that you are not required by law to obtain more than one estimate or appraisal. This is nice because I have a body shop in mind, but I don’t have time to go to multiple places for multiple estimates. Thanks for sharing this information!

I love your advice to not drive your car if you feel that it has issues and can not be driven. You really want to be sure that you are safe behind the wheel. After all, an unsafe car makes the driver quite unsafe as well. Do you have any other tips about finding someone to help you repair your car?
